Le Minh Hai – Cranes for faster cargo throughput

Le Minh Hai is vice manager of the business department at Hai Phong Port Holding Limited Liability Co. and as such is responsible for contact with clients and the negotiation and supervision of container contracts. Hai Phong Port is the biggest seaport with the highest cargo throughput in northern Vietnam – nearly 15 tons of cargo passed through its three terminals last year. It facilitates the import and export of goods from the 17 northern provinces of Vietnam and the transit to and from northern Laos and southern China.

When Hai participated in the Manager Training Programme in 2009 he particularly wanted to improve his management skills and use the opportunity to get to know one of the major economies in the European Union. He was not disappointed: “I came to know German culture, the way the Germans behave, the way they do business, and what they expect from Vietnamese partners.”

Hai was immediately able to apply his new knowledge, when in spring 2009 Hai Phong Port bought two multipurpose gantry cranes from a Brandenburg-based company. The business contact with this German company has since extended to the acquisition of two more quayside gantry cranes as well as four additional multipurpose gantry cranes in 2010. With a lifting capacity of 40 and 45 tons respectively, the new cranes can accelerate the throughput rate of cargo containers and further increase efficiency.

Besides establishing contact with the aforementioned German company, Hai considers the improvement of management skills to be his greatest achievement from the training programme: “I gained knowledge and experience of project and finance management, and learned how to give a really good presentation. These are very important skills for a manager.”

He also studied logistic and storage systems in various companies and particularly enjoyed the course at the training centre: “Interesting lectures, enthusiastic teachers, friendly classmates – I had a wonderful time in Germany.”
